Community Project
kan-win art project
A powerful tribute to the strength and resilience of Asian American women and children who have survived domestic violence, sexual violence and gender based violence.
The project “Unbroken Thread” is a powerful tribute to the strength and resilience of Asian American women and children who have survived domestic violence, sexual violence and gender based violence. Inspired by the Clothesline project (https://www.clotheslineproject.info/), the artwork will incorporate garments worn by survivors, symbolizing the weight and impact of their experiences. The use of garments will create a visual representation of the journey of healing and transformation while fostering a sense of community and support for those who have been impacted by these forms of violence.
What to Expect
basic art instruction
Participants will bring multi-media articles (pieces of clothing, pieces of art they've created, etc) that they're donating to the collective art project.
storytelling
We'll have a storytelling session where we share about traumatic experiences. Confidentiality is required amongst all participants.
Multi-language
To best support survivors, the multiple sessions will be held in languages of the groups that KAN-WIN works with. The first session will be held in Mandarin, and there will be translators for English-only speakers.
Participants will be invited to express their feelings and experiences by writing messages on fabric squares, which will be combined with pieces of garments they bring to create a collective artwork that symbolizes the strength and resilience of survivors. As the pieces of fabric are sewn together, the artwork will grow, symbolizing the collective strength of the Asian American community and their resilience in the face of violence. By using garments that have been worn, the project will serve as a physical representation of the emotional weight that survivors carry with them. Through the act of creating this artwork together, participants will not only have the opportunity to share their stories but also find support and solidarity with others who have gone through similar experiences. The final artwork will serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of violence on individuals and communities, as well as the strength and resilience of survivors.
